The site where this camp sat brought a multitude of challenges with it. The camp sat in a swath that caused water to pool around the foundation. Over the years this water caused this little three season camp to heave and settle repeatedly. The result of all that movement left it twisted to the point of near disrepair. The homeowner and I exhausted all possible solutions, including tearing it down. However, because of how close the camp was to the water and the proximity of the road behind the camp, reconstructing the original structure made the most sense.
Once the structure was straightened and all water issues were addressed we basically rebuilt the camp from the studs out. All new wiring, plumbing and spray foam throughout really tightened the building envelope. The homeowner wanted an open concept layout. We achieved this by reclaiming the space from the front porch by adding a beam, eliminating a wall and turning it into four season living. This almost doubled the square footage of the living room and once we updated the windows it created the feel that you are literally on top of the lake. Through creative design we were also able to add a wood stove, a half bath upstairs and a great use of space in the entry that incorporated a full-size washer and dryer.
Another aspect of the project that made it unique was that the homeowner did not want any sheetrock used in the camp. Our crew took a lot of pride in their craft while working on this project and it is evident in the outcome. The fact that this "Crooked Little Camp" was salvaged is an art and testament to creative craftsmanship.
