This area of Maine has a long history of summer children’s camps on its many pristine lakes. Often, these summer campers return as adults, purchase land near the camp they loved as a child and build their dream vacation home. I have helped many customers realize this dream including one family who actually bought a portion of the, by then defunct, camp that the husband had attended for years as a boy.
Initially, the family actually lived in one of the old cabins which we renovated while they made plans for their future new home. The entire family fell in love with the lake and surrounding area and the new 4000+ square foot home captures details of what they enjoy most. The lake is the star attraction and is easily viewed from the wall of windows extending 42 feet long and reaching 18 feet high. A massive stone fireplace warms this breathtaking space. A custom cut railing featuring the images of lazily swimming lake trout edges the staircase and interior balcony. A backlit cornice depicting the pine and spruce shoreline in silhouette delights the viewer in the great room. Four bedrooms, four bathrooms, custom gourmet kitchen, hardwood and cork flooring and screened porch make for a vacation retreat the owners are eager to return to year after year.
I first met these owners over 30 years ago when I helped them put their sailboat in the water. Our excellent working relationship evolved into an easy friendship and through the years, I have found that my crew and I usually become friends with the people we work for. That’s part of what makes my days interesting and rewarding.
